fatal: Can't get REMOTE_USER!

Acutally, I am quite sure that I am authenticating successfully because apache gives an error when I enter an incorrect username or passwd into it's prompt. If you would like I can send you the contents of both .htaccess and .htpasswd files but they are straight out of the documentation. I know this error sounds weird so if you would like to check it out the URL is http://billing.slaxlan.org:81 with username guest and passwd guest. Another interesting thing is that the apache access logfile shows an authenticated user. Here's what the log shows : "billing.slaxlan.org 12.225.181.13 - guest [06/Apr/2002:02:15:49 -0800] "GET /images/small-logo.png HTTP/1.1" 200 4781 "http://billing.slaxlan.org:81" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; MSN 2.5; Windows NT 5.0; MSOCD; T312461)"" Any ideas?

Exactly.

It appears more likely you are mistaken.
