I recall perldoc perlvar using $< $> for UID/EUID. It looks like the order
of steps to setup the freeside user was not correct.  I've installed
freeside a handful of times (production, lab/tests, development), and I
don't recall this popping up in any of my previous installs.

The install step clones the source to a staging directory, rewrites some
content, and copies that to the install destination. Later on, I'm not sure
if you changed freeside's user id. maybe you deleted it, created yours, and
created freeside again.
